Diesel Chips

Here in Colorado with thinner air and climbing
altitudes, diesel chips are a common option. Diesels drink tremendous amounts of
air compared to a gas engine. Your
diesel drinks 18,000 gallons of air for each gallon of fuel. Turbo's are
a big help forcing more air into the engine. In the old days traveling through
the mountains with diesels without turbo's was how we killed the mosquito's.
Smoke could be seen for miles rolling out the canyons behind Mercedes cars and
the older Dodge and Ford diesels. Back then the GM diesels didn't have enough
power to be driving in the mountains.

All that has changed and now the big three
truck manufactures all have powerful clean burning diesel options. But the air
is still thin here and the truck manufactures never use all their
diesels
potential. That room for improvement has created a whole industry. Usually the
first things I recommend for improving power is changing to a high volume
permanent air filter and increasing the size of your exhaust system. But another
option to do before or after the air filter and exhaust is a good quality diesel
chip. They are very easy to install.
We
all want more power. The tricky part is to do it safely. I usually recommend the
low or middle setting on diesel chips. When you do modify your
diesel I recommend you also be able to gauge the changes with more gauges. At
least I would add an exhaust manifold temperature gauge and if you have an
automatic transmission, a tranny temp gauge. You want to monitor the new power
and what it does to your truck. You will be able to pull hills and accelerate
better, having gauges will help you know when to downshift if you have an
increase in engine temperature.
Don't forget when you crank up the power with Superchips or
